2024 Summer Overview
After the continually frigid water during the 2022 season I think all of the guards and myself included were worried we might have a repeat of that unually cold water. Luckily that was not the case and we had a nice summer when it came to water temperature. It's amazing how a 3 degree difference in average temperature can make such a difference. The surf was a bit rougher this year as noted by our 33 days of limited bathing and 120 rescues. We welcomed quite a few new lifeguards to the squad this year. Surf City Lifeguard-In-Training Academy graduates included Dean, Brody, Laura, and Allie. We also welcomed Christian, Megan, Bridget, Lily, Morgan, Sydney, Madison, Brian, Katherine, Joey, Johnny, Erin, Blake, Brooke, and Chris to the squad.
Surf City is still up and coming when it comes to lifeguard tournament. Notable performances included a team win at our Epic Tournament as well as at Seaside Park. The team traveled to Diamond Beach and came away with a 3rd place team finish with both Shane and Pepper winning their individual events. The Surf City women lost a really close one 59 to 57 at the Long Beach Township Women's tournament. It's the first time since the inception of this tournament 5 years ago that Surf City did not win it. We also came in second by a couple points at the Harvey Cedars MidSummer Meltdown. It came down to the last event on that one. Finally, things were looking really good for the team after the first night of the Island tournament with Surf City holding 1st place. We later slid down to 2nd overall but it was a great season for the Surf City team.

Some Photos from 2024
I really like this photo because there are so
many conversations taking place.
Diamond Beach - Friday June 21, 2024
Going into the
Diamond Beach tournament, we were looking at it as more of an opportunity to get
some early season competition experience and to get some of the younger guards
involved more than “we’re going in it to win it!”
Brooke just had her wisdom teeth out, so she was out.
Darren had planned a family trip months ago so he was out.
George and Erin were away on a cruise that was also planned long ago.
Killian was on a pre-planned vacation and Pepper also couldn’t make this
one.
So how did it go?
Pretty well actually, read on.
The ocean was
choppy with a strong South wind.
It
was going to be a bumpy ride in the boat and on the boards.
Zach and I were up first in the Doubles Boat.
After missing the start last year I was determined to row this one.
We had a good start and got out clean.
I made a navigation error that cost a few precious seconds but after
turning the apex buoy it looked like it was going to come down to us and
Wildwood Crest.
They were a little
ahead but we were closing on them.
They caught a wave and sheared, we got on a wave and held it a bit longer.
Zach jumped out and it was a race to the finish that we lost by a few
seconds. 2nd place Surf
City finish for the Doubles Boat.
Next up was the
Open Paddle.
It as an “M” course
with the flag nearly on the beach.
Killian, Nate, and Ryan paddled this event for Surf City and finished in the
middle of the pack and finish in the order I just listed.
Olivia competed in her first lifeguard event in the women’s paddle along
with Haley.
It was a very
competitive field and Olivia came off of the center M flag in 3rd
place!
She fell of the pace but
Olivia and Haley did a nice job representing Surf City in the women’s paddle.
Next up were the
Open and Women’s swim.
Laura swam
for the women and put in a good effort.
Dean, Shane, and Sean swam in the Open race.
Shane was out to the first buoy in 1st place and ended up
finishing 4th overall.
Dean really put it on the field and won the event!
Super impressive performance from a 17 year old in a field of men
certainly older than him.
Sean also
mixed it up in this one for Surf City.
The Paddle Rescue
Relay was next with Ashton paddling to pick up Killian in the first leg.
Keep in mind that this was also Killian’s first lifeguard competition.
Even though Ashton’s first day of work was the previous day he had an
amazing paddle to the buoy, hitting it in first.
Killian jumped on and they were off.
I mean really off.
Like way
ahead of the field and then they could a wave an rode it perfectly to the beach
giving Jack, who would be paddling out to pick up Olivia a good 20 second head
start.
Jack kept it safe, held the
lead, Olivia jumped on and they held onto the lead for the second 1st
place SCBP finish of the night!
The final event was
the Rescue Relay.
The Diamond Beach
boat next to us jumped the gun as I saw the bow rower jump into the boat before
the whistle!
Zach jumped in I pushed
us out, jumped in and we were off to catch the Diamond Beach boat who were
leading the pack.
I believe we
caught them and I tossed the torp to Shane either first or tied to first.
Shane absolutely demolished the field to the beach, which is his
specialty, and crossed the line giving Ryan a good lead on the board portion of
the event.
It was looking good for
SC to win another one when the Sea Girt paddler caught a bomb at the buoy.
It was a running race to the line, looked like a dead heat to me but they
gave it to Sea Girt so we’d have to settle for 2nd Place in the
Rescue Relay.
When the points
were tallied Surf City came in 3rd place with 16 points, Diamond
Beach in 2nd with 18 points, and Sea Girt in 1st for 19
points.
Imagine how that would have
gone if we had our full team?
18th Annual Surf City Epic Tournament – Sunday July 14, 2024
Unlike last year the conditions for the 18th
annual Epic lifeguard tournament were problematic to say the least.
52 degree water, thick fog, and large surf.
The tournament was postponed until Sunday.
Sunday was a much nicer day… until the tournament started!
All day the waves were small and there was no fog, the water even warmed
up a bit.
But just before the
tournament started the fog rolled in.
I gambled it would roll back out soon enough.
We set off the Epic run-swim competitors and decided we’d
break the event into the run and swim with the stagger recorded from the run
portion of the event.
This was done
to allow time for competitors to remove their wetsuits.
Simultaneously we started the Surf City.
It was completely fogged out.
It was bad.
Even with the Waverunner
directing swimmers the first leg swam far past the buoy down to 7th
street!
Dean still came across the
line first.
I was considering
cancelling the event.
Things were
not good.
But then the fog
dissapated!
Brooke came in 2nd
in the next leg of the relay with Shane and Pepper holding that position.
2nd place Surf Dash for Surf City.
Meanwhile Darren and Olivia were lined up for the time
trial start of the swim portion of the Epic Run-Swim.
Darren ended up finishing 2nd and Olivia 5th.
Fantasic finishes, especially for 1st year guard Olivia being
the first woman across the line and beating to male competitors.
Their combined places of 7 (2+5) easily earned them a first place finish
in this event.
Next up was the Paddle Relay. Ryan, Allie, Jack, Pepper.
I don’t remember exactly how this raced played out but I do know that we
ended up in 2nd place.
Zach and Pepper got a redo of the Mixed Doubles Boat
Push/Row and didn’t waste the opportunity getting the boat launched first.
There was a boat close behind them and I was worried that when they
turned the apex buoy the boat behind them wouldn’t think ahead that boats halt
forward motion when they turn so of course the boat behind t-boned them at the
turn and caused a tie up.
Luckily
they broke off just as the other boats approached and Zach and Pepper out rowed
the other boats to shore and brought home another first place finish for Surf
City.
Olivia and Lucas started off the final event, the Iron Man
Medley with a 800 yard relay run and gave Darren a nice lead going into the swim
portion of the event.
Unfortunately
Killian ran into a tough set on the way out.
Pepper and Haley finished up the event in 3rd place, which was
enough for Surf City to win the tournament!
What I find pretty amazing is that even though we finished
with two 1st places, two 2nd places, and a 3rd
place, Harvey Cedars was only 3 points behind at the end of the night.
Harvey Cedars is always strong.
Lavaladies – Monday July 15, 20
The Lavaladies tournament is modeled after the Lavallette
6-Guard tournament but with 8 female competitors.
For the rescue relay Allie and Laura handled the buoy rescue, Olivia and
Steph the paddle rescue, and Haley and Collette the boat rescue.
Since this event is so massive and includes so many guards I believe it
is a good representation of the strength of the team and just like the guys the
ladies came in 4th!
Nice
job.
Brooke and Bridget were our line pull team.
There was some tangling of the line with the team in the next lane that I
think caused issues with Brooke’s swim and they didn’t score any points.
Brooke was back at it with Collette in the boat swim and they came in 4th
place.
The Iron Man Medley team of Brooke (swim), Olivia (paddle),
and Collette and Bridget also finished 4th.
One highlight of the night was the 3rd place paddle relay
finish by Haley, Steph, Allie, and Olivia.
The swim relay team of Brooke, Allie, Laura, and Haley came in 5th.
Collette and Bridget were up next in the final event, the 1000’
doubles row.
They made a wide turn
coming into the buoy in 4th place but the boats in first and second
tied up!
Collette and Bridget made
the most of this opening and finished in 2nd place in the 1000’
doubles!
Great job to our Lavaladies
team!
Lavallette 6-Guard – Tuesday July 16, 20
This year our 6
guard team would consist of myself, Shane, Dean, George, Jack, and Kieran.
Dean and Shane completed the buoy rescue portion of the rescue relay
event, Kieran and Jack the paddle rescue, and George and I the boat rescue.
I’m always amazed at how good and evenly the 7 teams that generally
compete in the tournament are.
We
can in 4th in this event and it was less than a minute that separated
first place from last place in this event that lasted over 15 minutes!
Dean and Kieran
competed in the line-pull but we didn’t score any points in this one.
Shane and I did the boat swim and again came up out of the points.
Dean swam in the
Iron Man Medley, Shane paddled, and I rowed with Jack but again no points!
It was turning into a long night with no love from the ocean for Surf
City.
Jack was mad and he
directed that energy into his paddle on the first leg of the paddle relay.
He flew into the water on his knees actually getting some air on the
board.
He fantastic entry and fast
paddling got him past a wave that the other teams hit and put us in first place.
He handed the board to Kieran and then Kieran passed it to me.
When I passed the board to Shane for the final leg with a neck-and-neck
race!
Shane put in a great last leg
of the race and got across the line first!
First place paddle relay for Surf City.
That was unexpected.
Dean, Kieran,
George, and Shane were our swim relay team but finished out of the points.
Finally we all rowed in the boat relay and again no points.
Not a great night but the paddle relay victory did redeem our efforts a
bit.
Barnegat Light Young Gunz – Thursday July 18, 2024
Since we didn’t
have another tournament “on top” of this one this year I got a chance to attend.
It was well run by Barnegat Light and a lot of fun.
I don’t remember all of the results but Killian came in 1st in
the paddleboard and Dean 2nd in the Iron Man, both were gutsy
performances!
Allie and Olivia
also came in 3rd and 4th, respectively in the Iron Woman.
Seaside Park Lifeguard Tournament – Monday July 22, 2024
The Seaside Park tournament is perenially voted the “most
fun” tournament by the majority of the squad, probably because it has such ha
wide variety of events and is right next to the boardwalk, which makes getting
together after the tournament for some food easy.
This year we had two new comers, Olivia and Lucas competing in the flags.
Lucas made it to the final 5 but Olivia was unfortunately eliminated in
the first round.
Lucas put in a great run at the start of the IM Medley
getting Darren into the water in 2nd place.
Darren maintained our second place and tagged Ashton to start the paddle
portion of the event.
Ashton put in
a solid paddle and got the boat into the water in second place.
Pepper and Jack hit some surf on the way out in the boat and finished up
the event with a 3rd place for Surf City.
Zach and I were up next in the Doubles Row.
It was close as always among the top 3 teams.
We all got a wave and one team that was a boat length or two behind
caught a wave and we finished on the wrong side of it in 4th place.
Brooke, Dean, Pepper, and Shane blew out the swim relay with a “making it
look easy” 1st place.
It was another blow out for Ashton and Killian in the
Paddle Pick-Up.
Ashton got to the
mark in second or third but once Killian got on the board they pulled away from
the field for another easy 1st place Surf City finish.
Next was the boat relay.
I don’t remember the specifics but I do remember we put it together
nicely and finished in 3rd place.
Ryan, Killian, Ashton, and Pepper put in great performances in the paddle
relay.
Then, much like the Doubles
Boat, Pepper was headed to the shore in first place and the team to our right
caught a wave and it was a race to the finish.
Our lane judge raised our number first but somehow we came in 2nd
place?
It was close going into the run relay.
We went with our first place run relay team from last year of Ryan, Jack,
Bella, Jessie, Shane, and Kieran.
It’s been a long time since we didn’t win this event but it happened last night
and we came in 2nd place to Island Beach, who happened to be the team
we needed to beat.
We’d have to
settle for a team 2nd place at Seaside Park this year.
Congrats to Island Beach.
This year the Red Bull lifeguard competition would take
place in Brant Beach and each team would consist of 2 women, one of which could
be an alumni.
We sent Pepper and
Maria.
The first round consisted of
an “M” course run from the dune to the water, back to the dune, and then again
to the water and to the finish.
Pepper and Maria finished 12/16.
Round two was a long “M” course swim.
Really long and the water was cold.
The Surf City duo finished 4th in this one.
Next up with a really long “M” course paddle and Maria and Pepper earned
a 5th place finish here.
Their performance in the first three events was good enough to earn them one of
the five coveted spots in the finals.
The remaining ten teams would have to battle it out in the bonus round
for one spot in the finals
The final round consisted of a Paddle Rescue and a Buoy
Rescue.
Unfortunately Maria got
caught on the inside on the swim out in the Paddle Rescue and that made it tough
to come back in this one.
When you
consider the fact that Pepper and Maria hadn’t had much time to prepare for this
one their performance here was quite extraordinary.

The other favorite tournament is the HC Meltdown, “The Sticks Make The Picks.” I love it.
The tournament started with the swim relay consisting of
Dean, myself, George, and Pepper.
Dean got to the buoy first or very close to it.
I got worked.
No way around
it, that’s what happened as I got to the beach for the handoff to George in 5th
and that is where we finished.
It is
doubtful George or Pepper lost us a place.
I also lost the buoy in the surf, breaking wave pulled it off me and I
had to swim off course to get it!
Not a good swim.
The paddle relay team of Ashton, Jack, Kieran, and Shane
did much better pulling of a 3rd place.
Keep in mind that there were 10 teams with wide spacing on the buoys so
the course had a wide range of surf from one end to the other.
Next up was the rescue relay.
Dean and George completed the buoy rescue in about third place and Ashton
and Kieran maintained that spot.
Pepper and I were the boat rescue team and I got launched in third place just a
bit behind the Sea Girt team.
Ha!
Someone to catch.
I nearly
caught that boat by the buoy and Pepper hopped in so quick we came off the buoy
ahead of them and opened up the lead on the row to the beach.
2nd place for Surf City.
Jack and Shane were our boat swim team and they came in 5th
place.
I don’t like the boat swim.
Everyone jumps early and shortens their swim.
That’s what happened last night.
Boat rescue is a better event, it is self-regulating, no cheating.
For the Iron Man Medley Kieran ran, getting Dean into the
water near the top of the field, Dean had a great swim as did Ashton on the
board.
Jack and I were launched in
third place just behind Barnegat Light.
We were closing on them on the way to the buoy and came off the turn just
behind them.
We caught them and a
nice runner and finished in 2nd place.
Shane and Pepper had a solid row in the doubles row and
came in 2nd place.
George
got picked for the singles row and put in an amazing performance coming out in 2nd
place!
End result?
Second place team finish for Surf City at the Meltdown!
Written by Jack Kearns
First event was the Boat Relay. Our crews were Mark/Zach,
Kieran/Shane, George/Jack. This was by far the most exhausting event of the
summer as we had to push the boat across the whole sand bar to launch, and bring
it all the way back to dry sand on the transitions. The whole squad was involved
in these launches! Mark/Zach came in with the front of the pack, we lost a
little bit of ground through the next 2 legs and by our last launch we were all
exhausted. In the end, we finished in 5th and grabbed 1 point.
Next was the Paddle Relay of Ashton/Killian/Jack/Ryan. All
4 of us put in some of our best '500 efforts of the summer. Our relay definitely
had the best strategy for dealing with the sandbar. While most teams carried the
boards, which slowed down their run, we all dragged the board (Sorry!) and were
able to sprint a lot faster. Ashton got off to his normal start and got to the
buoy first by a few boards. Killian extended the lead, Jack extended it some
more, and Ryan brought it home. Our relay probably won by around 1/2 a buoy,
some of the teams were just sending their 4th legs out as Ryan was crossing the
finish line for 1st.
Mark/Zach took on the boat pickup, with the victim being
passive. Zach caught a set on the way out, but did a good job navigating. That
set caused some time to be lost and we unfortunately just finished outside the
points here.
The Swim Relay was Joe, Darren, George, and Shane. We came
in 4th. I don't remember much other than it being very close and all the guys
put in great swims.
The Surf Medley was Darren, Ashton, then Kieran/Shane.
Darren had a great swim, battling with the Cedars and ISBP swimmers. They all
tagged the paddlers at the same time. Ashton turned on the jets and sprinted
across the sandbar, paddled hard, and tagged our boat in first with a few
seconds lead over ISBP. ISBP had good rowers this year, but Kieran/Shane had one
of their best rows of the summer and held them off. Another 1st.
Last was Mark/Zach in the '1000 row. Mark and Zach had a
great row. Got to the buoy neck and neck with Ship Bottom and ISBP. The deciding
factor came down to Ship Bottoms launchers pushing the boat across the sandbar
with the rowers in it, while we jumped out and ran to the finish. Their method
proved to be faster and was a rare occasion of SCBP getting outsmarted. 3rd
place.
Overall we earned points in 5 of 6 events. 2 1sts, 1 3rd, 1
4th, 1 5th. We finished tied in 2nd with Ship Bottom at 20pts, but won the
tiebreaker on more 1st place finishes. We ended the tournament with a
celebratory human pyramid for a photo and a stop at Burger25 on the way home.
The water was not quite a chopped up as it normally at 6PM
for the Double row, which always starts the Island Beach Tournament.
It was close in the Double row.
10 teams total with 3 out in front. We were on the wrong side of the
scramble to the finish and ended up 3rd.
The swim relay team of Darren, Shane, Kieran, and George
was solid finishing in 5th.
After the swim relay the Lavallette guys remarked, “Did you see that girl
in the Harvey Cedars swim relay swimming with a wetsuit?”
Yeah, I saw it.
Zach and Dean came in 6th in the
Row-Out/Swim-In.
But who knows
really?
Everybody jumps early…
The Paddle Relay team of Jack, Shane, Ashton, and Ryan came
in a very close 2nd place.
The Boat Relay consisted of me and Zach, Shane and Kieran,
Jack and Pepper, and CJ and George.
We came in 7th.
There was no stopping our Rescue Relay team.
Darren swam the line with Dean as the victim and Lucas and CJ pulling got
to the beach in first place.
The
undefeated Paddle Relay team of Ashton and Kierin only lengthened that lead.
Zach and I rowed out to pick up Jack.
We had a big lead.
It was an
easy 1st place for Surf City in this event.
4th place overall for Surf City at Island Beach.
Cold water and threats of thunderstorms threatened the
first day of the island races but we decided to set up and see if the weather
and water would cooperate.
They did.
Zach and I started it off as usual with the Mile row.
Decent start caught BL by the first mile buoy, they somehow stop rowing
or something halfway through the turn and “Ar Nar” a tie up!
15 or 20 seconds later we’re rowing again.
LBT was in the far South lane so they had a clean row.
We rowed well and pulled away from the other boats and made up the ground
on LBT, turned our buoy first but turned the boat sideways in a wave and had to
recover.
It turned into a running
race and Zach got across the line first.
Without that BL collision it would have been much easier but we’ll take
the W.
Meanwhile Pepper was battling
it out with the women in the 1500’ paddle.
Apparently she came off the final buoy on third, caught a wave and
out-hustled HC to the line for back-to-back 1st place finishes for
Surf City to start the tournament.
Darren and Joe were up next in the Buoy Rescue. Unfortunately Darren “ran” out of one of his fins on the way to the water. There is sat, on the starting line! Darren and Joe still managed to pull out a 4th place despite Darren only swimming with one fin.
Ashton got us off to a good start and handed the board off to Killian, who then handed the board to Ryan and finally Kieran. The top 3 teams were pretty much even up to the last leg and Kieran had no waves in his lane and the boys in 3rd place.
Sydney and Bridget were next in the Women’s Doubles Row. The launch was good but then Bridget popped a few oars, she reset and they got under way. It was a good race with HC and Surf City finished in 2nd place. Bridget jumped out a little early, it's generally faster to stay with the boat. But 2nd place! Great race.
Jack and George in the Boat Rescue ended up being a 3rd place for Surf City. George had a great swim getting to the mark in 2nd but they lost a place during the rest of the race.
Once again for the third year in a row Shane made the Iron Man look easy. After a solid run he “worked” the field in the swim and earned himself a solid 30 second lead, which he maintained throughout the rest of the event.
After winning the Iron Woman last year Pepper swapped places with the HC
competitor this year and had to settle for 2nd place, which of course
is still a great finish in such a competitive event.
At the end of the first night Surf City was in 2nd place
overall with 47 points and HC was in 1st place with 52 points.
The surf with large with densely packed wave sets for the second night of the tournament. Shane got tagged the buoy first in the line pull but due to the surf and lateral current there was nearly 1000’ of line that needed to be pulled in. Ryan and Kieran were up to the task and easily secured a 1st place finish for Surf City.
Zach and
I got smashed on the way out in the Doubles row.
No water in the boat but we were clearly last or close to it to the mark.
We were able to get on a nice wave on the way in for a 2nd
place finish.
Get out of the seat like this to protect your back when the boat comes down
hard. Use your knees to absorb the shock.
Dean and Brooke were up next in the Open and Women’s swim.
Dean came in 4th and Brooke got out of the water just behind
the HC swimmer but was able to run her down to the finish line!
Great effort Brooke.
As usual, the Paddle Rescue wasn’t even close.
Ashton got to the mark in about 2nd or 3rd but once
Killian got on the board they paddled away from the field as they have done in
every Paddle Rescue event this summer.
Amazing.
Are you not entertained?
The South end got smashed in the Singles row and CJ was
unfortunately in the South end. 5th
place.
Jack and Collette were also
in the South end for the Mixed Doubles, bad set = 5th place.
The Boat Relay was postponed and later cancelled due to the large surf and inabilty for the result to change the eventual tournament winner. The 1500’ Paddleboard contained a ridiculous field. Austrilian and a guy flown in from LA just to compete in this event. In fact the winner from last year came in a second by a good amount this year. Ryan ended up 5th.
It was a tough night for Allie, Haley, Olivia, and Steph in the Paddle Relay and
they ended up in 6th place.
In the final event, the Surf Dash, George had a rough first leg and
according to him “almost drowned.”
He tagged Brooke in last place and Brooke fought back a couple places while
younger brother Dean fought back a few more for a 2nd place finish.
Another hard fought 2nd place team finish in the annual Long Beach Island Tournament! Congratulations on Harvey Cedars on winning another Island Championship and to all of the teams in the competition.
Sunday August 6, 2024 - Squad Photo and Breakfast at the Garrison's
The Garrisons kindly took over the breakfast hosting duties from the Reardon's for our squad photo. Thank you!
If I remember correctly there were 11 teams at Ship Bottom
this year.
Looks like it might be
one of those nights where the South end buoys are closer than the North end,
we’ll see.
Darren, Shane, Kieran,
and George 6th place in the Swim Relay.
Yeah, something’s up with the buoys.
Not a good row for Zach and I coming in 6th in
the Doubles.
Or are the buoys weird?
Buoy distances don’t matter for Ashton and Killian in the
Paddle Pick-Up.
Ashton did get beat
to the mark by the South end teams but they are just two fast when they both get
on the board. 1st place
SC Paddle Rescue, again.
Boat Relay up next.
Zach and I out first, solid row, then Shane and Keiran, finally CJ and
George, 4th place.
Top
teams on the South end again.
Hey,
we beat Ocean City, they came in 5th.
Ashton, Killian, Ryan, and Kieran 5th in the
Paddle Relay.
Not believing this.
Buoys are off.
IM Medley, Jake running, Darren swimming, Ashton Paddleing,
and me and CJ rowing. 6th
place.
We didn’t flip the boat so that’s a good night at Ship
Bottom!
